How does it work?
A Guided Self-Study (GSS) course is mainly a self-taught course where you will correspond with your instructor primarily via the Postal Mail Service.  You are sent a packet of information for the course, complete the coursework, and send it back to the instructor for a grade.  All coursework must be completed by the end of the term that you are enrolled in.

Iowa Central’s Guided Self-Study Courses allow you to:

  • Study at a pace that fits your schedule
  • Accelerate academic progress
  • Meet requirements of certificate or licensure
  • Complete a degree or transfer to another college or university
  • Receive quality instruction anytime, anywhere, by enrolling in one of our Guided Self-Study courses

Enrollment
Iowa Central Community College has numerous Guided Self-Study courses available to students.  GSS classes are designed for students who have trouble taking classes due to scheduling, work, daycare, transportation, and many other conflicts that restrict a student from taking a course in a traditional classroom.
You can enroll in a GSS course during registration and up until mid-term of the semester.  Regardless of when you enroll, you must complete all coursework by the end of the semester.  Follow these two easy steps to enroll in a GSS course:

  1. Fill out the Iowa Central Application for Distance Education Courses, found on this website, or you can apply and register by phone by calling 1-800-362-2793 and ask for admissions.
  2. Send payment by check or money order, or pay with a credit card by calling 1-800-362-2793, extension 4880.

How do I Obtain Course Textbooks?
