Logistics and Transportation Management
Logistics and Transportation Management

Logistics and Transportation Management Program

Logistics & Transportation, key components of Supply Chain Management, are vital to the success of every business and the overall U.S. economy.  These functions are the global “Pipeline” responsible for planning, implementing, and controlling the efficient and effective flow of goods, services, and information from points of origin to points of consumption through out the world.  As former General Colin Powell stated, “As a combat arms officer, I learned early on that it’s the logisticians that get you to the battle and sustain you in the battle.”  Logistics is no longer a loading dock function, but is now viewed as a boardroom function in today’s businesses and having a direct impact on profitability.  Logistics and Transportation ensures that the Right product, in the Right quantity, in the Right condition, is delivered to the Right customer, at the Right place, at the Right time, and at the Right cost, or in other words Logistics and Transportation is the “Link to Success” for companies and career professionals.

Supply Chain Management positions are strategic in today’s business world, requiring strategic thinkers, analytical skills, and the application of technology.  The field impacts domestic and global economies, establish competitive advantages, and are vital to human survival.  If today’s supply chain network were to cease operations a person would quickly see the impact both locally and nationally.  Logistics and Transportation Management are the cornerstones and links to success.

The future is very bright for Logistics, Transportation Management, and Supply Chain professionals.  The “Collegiate Employment Research Institute” reports that Demand exceeds Supply, as logistics is a field with more positions than graduates each year.  The “Wall Street Journal” reports that logistics management talent is in short supply and the future is bright for Logistics and Transportation Management professionals.  The field is gender and race independent and is fertile ground for talented individuals.  Logistics management offers everything you want in a career – job openings at all levels, excellent salaries, upward mobility, exciting responsibilities and worldwide opportunities. As stated by Jim Wilkins, Vice-President Safety & Human Resources  Decker Truck Line, Inc.,We’re in an exciting and ever-changing industry providing a vital link between manufacturers and consumers. It’s estimated that the number of wage and salary jobs in the truck transportation and warehousing industry will grow 14 percent from 2004-2014. Today, firms place emphasis on formal education and Decker Truck Line, Inc. endorses and supports this outstanding Logistics and Transportation Management program.”

Logistics and Transportation Management are disciplines concerned with the efficient and effective flow of materials through the supply chain system.  Logistics and Transportation Management assume the “supply chain system” approach to the management of activities such as purchasing, material management, inventory management, operations, packaging, warehousing, transportation, and customer service.

The study of logistics and transportation serve as specialized programs for students planning careers in logistics and transportation.

The two-year program culminates with the internship, on-the-job training, in a logistics or transportation related position.  The internship program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable, real-world experience linking logistics and transportation theories and practices with the working world.
